Years back I was a second year teehacr in a small school in a small district that was very set in its ways. My principal was in his first year as well, and he and I shared a teaching philosophy that was pretty out-of-sync with the status quo in the school. Most of the teehacrs had been at the school for 10+ years and were very put out with this new principal who came in with ideas and strategies that meant more work for these teehacrs. Things came to a head at a staff meeting in which teehacr observations (the principal is required to visit each classroom, observe a lesson being taught and then follow up with the teehacr and the district. This is standard procedure every where except, apparently in this school) were being discussed. What started out as him requesting that the staff set appointments for these observations, to a room full of screaming women with this poor guy in their crosshairs. It was sickening to watch and eventually he broke down and started to cry. I stood up and spoke to them, telling them that when I was new to their school they extended me friendship and support could they please just step back for a moment and offer the same to this man, who was doing his best? It pretty much stopped the moment, but of course, it didn't really change their attitudes or future behavior. I knew it wouldn't, but it didn't matter the important thing was to let him know that at least one person in the room had his back . I was a friend to him at a time when he felt friendless.
